Description
Widespread in the arid and semi-arid zones of mainland Australia, the Variegated Fairy-wren is also recorded in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate regions, where it inhabits a wide variety of dense thickets. The species is mainly terrestrial, foraging on the ground or in the understorey. Often their presence in the shrubs is betrayed by their soft, chirping contact calls, though the species calls less often than other fairy-wrens. In contrast, their song is surprisingly loud, and is often given from a prominent perch.
